Quartz
Engineered stone composed of 93% quartz particles is low maintenance, non porous material that never needs to be sealed. There are a number of brand names on the market such as Cambria, Caesar Stone, Sile Stone and Zodiac just to name a few. They all have their own color palettes to choose from and are available in two thicknesses, 2cm and 3cm (approximately ¾” and 1 ¼” thick).
The surface of Quartz is almost always glossy with a slightly lower sheen than that of granite. This material being manmade has a repeat pattern and is not random looking like many natural stones. Quartz is essentially a stone product so it must be fabricated by a stone fabricator with a cost at or above middle priced granite. Theses product do carry an installed warranty of 10 years against staining and cracking.
Laminate
Formica, Wilsonart and Nevamar are some of the best well known manufacturers of laminate counter top material. It is a low cost alternative to stone and solid surface and comes in many colors and patterns. Scratches and chips are nearly impossible to repair but for the most part it is easy to maintain and keep clean but is not heat resistant due to the plastic top coating.
